Designing and installing an earthing system Kingston upon Thames: Hogs Mill STW

Client: Costain Ltd

Orion LPS were tasked with designing and installing an earthing system for the sub stations that were being installed all in compliance with BSEN 50522, our first task was to attend site and carry out an extensive soil resistivity test to enable the design team in the office to ensure that the site was safely earthed, our engineers carried out the test in four locations and reported back to the design team who were then able to create a full design using our bespoke software.

Design

Once the design had been agreed with the client our design team arranged a meeting with the client and mapped out the system on site ahead of our engineers commencing the installation, the system consisted of a network of 120mm copper cables connected to 19mm earth rods driven to a depth of up to 18 meters in 44 locations, the system was then connected using exothermic welded joints to ensure that the maximum temperature rise complied fully with BSEN 50522.

Throughout the installation and upon completion of the system accurate test measurements were carried out and recorded to ensure that the required earth resistance was achieved that would also maintain a safe working earth potential rise below 430 Volts for the complete site.

The client Costain Ltd have expressed their satisfaction with the service that we provided on this project and we are now working together on several other similar projects.
