Orion LP were tasked with designing and installing a lightning protection system for the large scale commercial project all in compliance with BSEN 62305. Acorn Retail Park is constructed of an almost complete metallic construction, so it was agreed at the start of the project that the lightning protection system would utilise the metallic framework and roofing of the structure to act as a natural path for the lightning to disperse. However due to the thickness of the metal cladding at roof level and the dangers of a hot spot in the event of a direct lightning strike tapes were fitted to reduce the issue.
To create a path to earth from the roof of the building to the ground, the steel frame requires connecting at top and bottom with frequent testing at all stages of the project confirming there is continuity throughout the various parts of the structure.
On jobs of this scale, ensuring that the connections to the steel frame are installed in the correct locations is challenging but with communication between our Contracts Manager and the design team at Kier, we worked together to create a smooth and efficient scheme for all the connections.
Throughout the contract, our engineers tested for continuity on each connection and each earth point upon completion to ensure that utilising the metal frame and roof could be used as part of the system.
The system meets and complies with the BSEN 62305 Standard and we continue to carry on a great relationship with Kier on ongoing projects.
