Lightning Protection Hastings: Hastings Town Hall

Client: Hastings Borough Council

The project was to design and  install a lightning protection system compliant with BSEN 62305 to Hastings Town hall, Hasting Town Hall is a grade 1 listed building constructed of sand stone blockwork, now situated in the middle of the towns shopping centre it is surrounded by pedestrian areas and shops. Orion took on the project and our designers worked closely with the operations team to decide the best options for access and aesthetics of the building while maintaining compliance with BSEN 62305.

Solving concerns

The major concerns for Hastings Borough Council was the safety of the public and staff working within the building while the installation took place. Orion held meetings with the shopping centre management and Hastings Borough Council, where we established the best options for access would be mobile elevated working platforms (cherry pickers) and full pedestrian protection from the working areas.

Working out of hours

At this point Orion took the decision that there would be a need for out of hours work where some of the access requirements would need to close entry points for staff and public to the ceremonial hall and town hall offices.

We also decided due to the amount of services (electrical and gas) within the pavement areas careful excavation work for the earth system would be required.

Design

Within the design stage we were able to offer an assortment of colours to suite the stonework of the façade and the black tiles at roof level and drawings of the system for approval from National Heritage. after the acceptance of our design we produced a construction phase plan and safe systems of work which were agreed by the shopping centre management and Hasting borough council, working areas were indicated on pre-construction drawings as to how the MEWP and barriers were erected and removed after the full installation took place daily so that the pedestrian where able to move freely around the building as we completed each area.

Execution Lightning Protection Hastings

All the access and excavation works were completed to plan although the earth system needed to be reviewed as the installation took place, further inspection found that there was deep concrete, waste pipes and unmarked electrical cables which had to be located and excavated around to allow for the installation of Rods or earth mats.  The works were completed well within the agreed time and within the budget without any major upset to the public.
